The Dunham Castle is not simply a large home. It is a historic estate compound with multiple living zones, income potential, guest accommodations, and a documented local story.
Few homes can claim more than a century of continuous relevance. Throughout its history, The Dunham Castle has evolved to serve the changing needs of the Monmouth community. Over the decades it has functioned as a private family estate, a respected funeral home, a multi-unit residential property, and more recently a successful short-term rental destination before being thoughtfully restored to its current role as an extraordinary single-family residence. This remarkable evolution reflects both the scale of the property and its enduring place in the history of Monmouth.
Built in 1902 for Andrew and Jessie Young, with historical research credited to Jeff Rankin.
Over 6,500 square feet of finished living space with extensive bedrooms, baths, kitchens, laundry areas, and entertaining rooms.
Approximately 1,500 additional square feet in a separate brick structure with furnishings and electric fireplace.
The furnished garden apartment has rented for approximately $1,200 per month.
Constructed in 1902, this distinguished Monmouth residence was built for Andrew and Jessie Young, members of one of Warren County's prominent agricultural families.
Andrew Young was a successful stock feeder, farmer, businessman, and adventurer whose family had immigrated from Scotland and settled in Warren County. His wife, Jessie Gibson Young, was the daughter of noted stock feeder and landowner John K. Gibson. Following the division of the Gibson estate in 1902, Andrew and Jessie began construction of what would become one of Monmouth's most impressive homes.
Prior to construction, the Young family home that occupied the corner was carefully moved to the north end of the property, where it remains today. In its place, the Youngs commissioned the stately brick residence that still anchors the corner more than 120 years later.
The Young family raised four children here—Muriel, Vera, Elizabeth, and Clyde—and the home became the setting for family gatherings, celebrations, and important milestones. Historical accounts suggest that all three daughters were married in ceremonies held within the residence.
Beyond Monmouth, the Youngs maintained a summer home on their farm northwest of Kirkwood. The property would later be developed by their children into what is known today as Young's Lake.
